"Not all those who wander are lost..." -J.R. Tolken
Except for me. I'm usually lost. Please take my Pearls of Wisdom and learn from my mistakes. This will probably be updated with every trip.
Lifelines
Essentials
• A passport cover for organizing travel documents • A lock for suitcases or hostels (even if you don't expect to stay in one) • A portable phone charger • An outlet adapter/voltage converter. Smaller is better, but more plugs is more convenient. • Cross-body purses • Comfy walking shoes- I've used my Tom's and Sperrys, but put a terrycloth sole insert in to keep them from smelling
Lessons Learned
• The first leg of my flight was an airline that had different weight limits for checked bags. My overweight bag cost $200. • Always have a backup outfit in carry-on bags. And basic toiletries. • Bring American allergy/cold medicine • Get a mani/pedi before leaving • Put all the Fireball in checked bags • Bring a travel steamer for wrinkled clothes • I unlocked my iPhone before leaving and got an international prepaid plan with a local number once I arrived. It is much cheaper to make calls and to use data this way, but bring your passport for verification. My plan is month to month. • Data is cheap. I ran out a week early and bought another 1GB for 3 Euro. • Texts are limited- use the WhatsApp app • Wifi is common • You need your passport to check into hotels. They don't care about American driver licenses in Europe. • B&Bs expect you to keep your check in time as an appointment. They will leave if you are late, and you will have to wait to check in until they feel like coming back. • Europe doesn't accept PIN codes that are longer than 4 digits. If your PIN code is 5 digits (like mine) then you will be able to use your card but not be able to withdraw cash. It will be a headache to deal with.
My 67lb suitcase with the broken handle...and now I pick it up how?
Don't...
• Pack heavy carry-ons • Pack heavy checked bags • Wear wedges for traveling • Expect reliable wifi everywhere • Skip bringing a jacket to the beach • Forget to check what time the last train leaves town
